What We Know About the 2012 Mazda RX-7

After being rumored off and on for the past five years, a new Mazda RX-7 looks to be on the way at last. Not much is known about it right now, as development has reportedly just begun, but sources predict a calendar-2011 debut, perhaps as an early-2012 model. By that time, Mazda's RX-8 will be nine years old and ready for retirement, hence speculation that the next RX-7 will replace Mazda's "senior" sports car.


Sources say the 2012 Mazda RX-7 will be another Japan-sourced two-door coupe, but based on Mazda's latest MX-5 roadster platform. However, that rear-wheel-drive architecture will be scaled up to near RX-8 size, which could mean a tiny back seat instead of a strictly two-passenger cockpit. Styling is said to be drawn from the 2006 Kabura concept, so look for traditional long-hood/short-deck proportions, an arched roof, prominent cycle-style front fenders, an aggressive nose, and big wheels pushed right out to the corners

While it might be just a rumor, Just Put uploaded some renderings of a 2012 Mazda RX-9, coming with a 1.8L Wankel engine and a 6 speed transmission.
I actually have no idea yet if these are leaked renderings or just the work of a fan, but I like it’s look, it reminds me of a concept Mercedes I’ve once seen around the web.

Pricing: hasn’t been released yet, but Mazda hopes to keep it below $30,000
Fuel economy: unknown at this point. Because the rotary engine is not generally known as an engine with great fuel economy, some have speculated that there will be a hybrid component included.
Engine: 1.3-liter rotary Wankel engine with somewhere between 200 and 270 horsepower
Acceleration: the RX-7 is designed to be a sports car and should have strong acceleration
Car safety features: safety features haven’t been announced yet, but should include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, and a variety of airbags.
Suspension: double wishbone suspension is likely for front and back
Warranty: likely to have a three-year/36,000 mile basic warranty; five-year/60,000 mile powertrain warranty; and three years or 36,000 miles of roadside assistance.


The wide-body RX-7 is wearing the same Veilside body kit as can be found on the car that appeared in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. As if that weren’t fame enough, this specific Mazda was the poster car for 2007’s Hot Import Nights car and music tour.
The RX-7... this is a great car. It has the famous rotary engine and performs well. The special engine gives it a very distinct sound. I would love to have one of these amazing machines.
